My Mother always told me I was born eating Coleman’s Barbecue because she went there all the time while pregnant with me. It must be true because I love their barbecue. When I was a kid, there was a Coleman’s in every town including Tunica and Clarksdale. My family ate there constantly. It became a tradition.
In 1966, A.B. Coleman started his original Coleman’s Barbecue in Tupelo. New locations soon started appearing all over and franchises were located from Missouri to Texas. Eventually 176 restaurants opened and Coleman’s became one of the largest BBQ chains in the South. Unfortunately these barbecue restaurants slowly began to close as modern food chains took control of the market. In fact, there are only two left today. One is in Senatobia and the other in Hernando. The Hernando eatery was one of the early ones and opened in 1971.
Coleman’s Barbecue offers all types of sandwiches and meals. No ribs but great barbecue.
I love the barbecue sandwich with slaw. The meal has two sides. Best sweet tea around.
Coleman’s Barbecue is located at 554 E. Commerce Street, Hernando, MS. 38632.
Hours are Monday thru Saturday. 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
